Folk Arts
Yichang
is especially rich in folk music and folk dances.There are 8 kinds
of folk songs,such as "Mountain Songs"," Field Songs", "Lantern
Tune",etc.The minority Tujia people are particularly good at
traditional ensemble of Chinese wind and percussion instruments
performances.There are a lot of instruments, such as
horn,flute,trumpet,gong and plucked instruments.Besides
these,there are three kinds of instruments which have national features.They are Muye,Local PiPa and Dongdongkui.The folk dances
are Tiaopi Dances, Dihuagu, Huaguzi,etc.Wufeng Folk Culture in
Hubei Province is the most important part of the whole nation's
culture.There are a lot of fairy tales.Depei is denominated
"National Treasure" by China Association for the Study Folk
Literature.

Modern Arts
 The
modern arts of Yichang have distinguishing features."The Seven
Fairies in Chashan," indited and performed by Yichang Beijing
Opera Group,was asked to put on a show in Beijing and Wuhan in
1950s,and it was highly praised by Dong Biwu and Li Xiannian,state
leaders at that time.
In 1980s, the monumental works The Yangtze Trilogy created by Yan
Guopei was put on to fluorescent screen.In 1991,Yichang Song and
Dance Troupe created and performed The Three Gorges Local
Conditions and Customs.It won the golden cup award for the new
person and new works of music and dance competition in Hubei
Province.In 1995,the large-scale Tujia marriage custom series
dance drama "Original Inhabitants" which was also created and
performed by Yichang Song and Dance Troupe won the fifth "Culture
Prize" awarded by the Ministry of Culture and the fourth "Five-One
Projet Prize" (the top honour for art works in China) awarded by
the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee.The MTV
songs "Baby Bird Flying" and "the Masses Regard Food as their
Heaven" selected and recommended by Yichang City won the first and
the second place in the national music show competition.In
September 25,1996,the TV play "Home at the Three Gorges" and the
MTV song "Baby Bird Flying" produced by Yichang City both won the
fifth "Five-One Project Prize" in the construction of the
spiritual civilization awarded by the Publicity Department of the
CPC Central Committee.On October 15,Yichang City selected and
recommended the "Song of Turning Millstone".It won the golden
prize in the first children's music competition of the country.
From 1998 to 2002,Yichang was the first and only medium-size city
in China who won seven awards of the "Five-One Project Prize" for
five successive years.These seven awarded works are:the
large-scale Tujia marriage custom series dance drama "Original
Inhabitants" for the 4th term,a children's song "Baby Bird Flying"
and the theme song "the Three Gorges Is My Home" of a TV play
"Home at the Three Gorges" for the 5th term,a radio play "The
First Migrants Village of the Three Gorges" for the 6th term,a
children's song "Children of the Three Gorges Love the Gorges" for
the 7th term and a childred's radio play "Adventures of the
Chinese Sturgeon",a children's song "the Yangtze is My Home" for
the 8th term.
